My Story — Why I Built This
From heartbreak to happiness — my journey to finding love in Asia
I never saw it coming. I believed my marriage was for life, and when it ended, I felt completely lost.
I had worked hard, tried to be a good husband and believed I was doing my best for my family. Like most marriages, mine had its ups and downs, but nothing could ever have prepared me for what happened.
When the lights went out and I was all alone, it was just me and my torturous thoughts. I know that feeling well.
I was in the over-thinking phase. I tried to piece together where it all went wrong, going over every little detail, every word that was said, every action.
I moved through anger, hurt, disbelief, isolation and self-blame.
As I sat in my apartment alone, I knew thousands of men around the world were going through the same gut-wrenching anguish as me. I wasn’t alone.
One freezing morning, I watched an elderly man struggle down the road with a walking stick. For reasons I still can’t fully explain, I saw my own future in that moment. It scared me more than I can explain.
That was my tipping point.
Finding the Kid I Used to Be
What really helped me? I found an old photograph of myself when I was young and looked at it long and hard. I tried to remember everything I could about that kid staring back at me. He was carefree and confident.
He never went anywhere. He was still with me, but somewhere along the way he lost his confidence and got buried under a mountain of negative thoughts and self-blame. I had to find him again. I had to start living.
I had done my three years alone. My children were grown. Any issues I had were confronted, accepted, or dealt with. I wasn’t running from my past — I was sprinting into my future.
I accepted my situation. I was at rock bottom, but on the flip side, the only way left was up. I accepted that every relationship has more than one perspective, and that I could not rebuild my life by endlessly searching for a perfect explanation.
I packed my bag and started travelling across Asia.
What I found there was a different world. I met women who valued family, loyalty, kindness and serious relationships — the same qualities I was looking for.
I eventually met Mei. She is gentle, kind, traditional, and everything I had dreamed of. She stood beside me with kindness, patience and loyalty, and together we built the partnership I had hoped to find.
